Spring is the perfect time to bring the beauty of the outside, inside. Creating a tablescape that reflects that, where friends and family can gather around is the perfect place to start. Below are some helpful tips to help you create your own unique spring tablescape for those special gathering moments.
- Color Scheme Ask yourself what would you like your color theme to reflect. What colors are you drawn to in spring? Look no further than right outside, with so many beautiful colors, drawing inspiration from the outdoors is a great place to start.
- After you’ve decided on your color scheme, adding all the different Layering Elements is key to elevating your table to a beautiful and thoughtful tablescape. Although adding layering pieces adds a ton of visual interest, it’s important to keep in mind the size of your table, you don’t want it to look overcrowded. Below is a helpful list of some layering options to help you get started:
- Table Coverings Decide if you want to cover your table completely or just a portion of it. Adding a table covering is key when designing a tablescape. It adds a sense of depth and warmth. If you want to cover the table completely, you could use a traditional tablecloth or if you want to get a little more creative, choose something completely out of the box, for instance a loose sheet, or blanket. If you want to cover just a portion of the table, try using either a traditional table runner, or something a little more unexpected such as a scarf (smaller table) or shawl (bigger table).
- Cloth Napkins Do you want to use a solid color or something with a print? Using solid colored napkins looks great when using a print table covering and using napkins with a print looks great against a solid table covering. Either way using cloth napkins helps elevate the overall look of the tablescape. You can also choose to use traditional napkin ring holders or you can use materials such as jute or ribbon to tie around the napkins.
- Placemats and Plate Chargers They’re great layering pieces to use in conjunction with your plates and add additional visual interest. Decide if you want to use placemats, plate chargers or both underneath your plates. Add different textures to add more interest and dimension and choose the shape that works in conjunction with the shape of your plates, either round or square.
- Dinnerware Flatware and Glassware When it comes to style, it all comes down to preference. Whether new or old, all the same or mixed and matched, it’s all about what you’re drawn to and what look you’re going for, informal or formal.
- Candles (real or faux) Taper, pillar, filled, votive or tea. There are many types and sizes to choose from. If using real, you may want to opt for smokeless and dripless. When choosing what type of candle, your decision may come down to safety, especially if there’s young children at the table.
- Candle Holders There are so many styles to choose from as well as different materials such as glass, wooden, metal, even concrete. It really comes down to what type of candles you want to use and what type of overall look you feel will work best.
- Plants/Flowers Whether real or faux, adding either one is key because it adds a soft organic element to the table which gives an overall beautiful look.
- Flower Vases/Plant Pots If you’re using flowers, do you want to use one vase (smaller table) or more (larger table), taller vases, or shorter vases? If you’re using plants, what type of pots do you want to use? Either way, there are many different materials, colors and styles to choose from. It all comes down to what you’re drawn to and what you feel will work best for the overall look that you’re going for. *You can also opt instead to scatter flowers or greenery organically on the table for a beautiful simplistic look.
- Trays There are many different styles and textures to choose from. Adding trays is a great layering piece to use in conjunction with such items as candles, plants or flowers. Again, it’s another piece you can add to elevate the visual interest of the table.
- Just remember, when creating your spring tablescape, let your creativity take over and most importantly have fun. Your loved ones will appreciate the extra effort you put into making the time gathered around the table not only beautiful but most importantly thoughtful and meaningful.
