Helpful Tips to Decorate a Dorm Room

Wow, how quickly time goes by! We’re in mid-August and for many college students that means time to head off to school soon. For some, you may be faced with the challenging task of figuring out how to decorate a small dorm room. The goal is to try and create a space that doesn’t feel cluttered but yet showcases your unique personality. Whether you want your space to feel like home away from home or feel like a fresh new start, below are some helpful tips to help guide you along the way:

  • First, decide what type of style and overall look you want for your space. If you’re not sure, looking online can really be helpful for gathering design inspiration.
  • Go on your college’s website and see if you can view a layout of a dorm room of the specific building you’ll be staying in. It may not be an exact replica but it will at least give you an idea of the amount of space you’ll be working with. This can be extremely helpful so that way you’ll have a better idea of scale and how much and size of decor would best accommodate your space.
  • Now that you know the approximate measurements of your space, your next step is to start putting together a list of essentials that you’ll need while away at school. All of these things will take up space, but again they’re essentials so they’re must haves. Here is a helpful link especially for those first time college students of essential items they may need. • As you’re working through the checklist remember, it’s all about showcasing your personality and what best represents who you are and your likes, especially when it comes to choosing the colors, design style and decor for your space. You’re going to be living in this space for about eight months so it’s important you like it!
  •  When decorating a small dorm room, it’s important to add elements that create a feeling of comfort and coziness. Choose cozy bedding, layer in comfy pillows and a soft throw blanket, hang up wall art (use Command strips), add ambient lighting such as floor lamps, a desk lamp, string lights (use small clear Command clips) and battery operated candles and even plug in your favorite scent. Don’t forget to add in some fun textured layering pieces, get creative with extra seating (pillows, a storage ottoman, a small collapsible chair and finally a few plants (real or faux) for a nature inspired feel. All of these things when used together aid in transforming a space harmoniously. Just remember, there needs to be a balance when it comes to decorating a small space, you want to give it character and personality without overdoing it and making the space feel cluttered and smaller than it actually is.

The bottom line is to have fun throughout the process. For some, this will be your first time away from home for an extended period of time. Having a dorm space that reflects your own personal style and uniqueness will not only help give you comfort but also confidence for this exciting new journey you’re about to embark on. Good Luck!
